New Hieromartyr Benjamin, Metropolitan of Petrograd and Gdovsk and those with him: Archimandrite Sergius and the laymen: Yuri and John
Commemorated: August 13 (July 31, Old Style)
Life
Benjamin (Kazansky, 1873–1922) was elected metropolitan of Petrograd by the clergy and laity of the diocese in 1917, one of the first bishops of the Russian Church chosen in this way in modern times. He was known as a pastor and for his gentle manner, and was loved in the city. In 1922 the Soviet authorities started a campaign to seize church valuables in the name of famine relief. Benjamin had offered to give them voluntarily, except for the sacred vessels, and was put on trial for resisting.
The trial in June–July 1922 sentenced ten defendants to death. Benjamin, Archimandrite Sergius (Shein), the lawyer Yuri Novitsky and Ivan Kovsharov were shot near Petrograd on 13 August (31 July Old Style) 1922. They were canonized in 1992.
