Martyrs Photios and Anicletas of Nicomedia and many with them
Commemorated: August 25 (August 12, Old Style)
Life
Anicetus was a count, a high official, at Nicomedia when Diocletian began the great persecution in 303. According to his Life, he went before the emperor and declared that he was a Christian and that tortures did not frighten him. His nephew Photius embraced him in public and confessed the faith too. The Life tells of long torments that failed to kill them; at last a great furnace was lit, and many Christians of the city, with their wives and children, walked into it with them. The martyrs died c. 305–306.
