Martyrs Capitolina and Eroteida
Commemorated: November 9 (October 27, Old Style)
Life
Capitolina was a noblewoman of Cappadocia who, according to her Passion, gave away her wealth to the poor and freed her slaves. During the persecution of Diocletian she was imprisoned as a Christian, refused to sacrifice to the gods and was beheaded, in 304.
Her servant Eroteis, the account says, threw a stone at the governor in her mistress's defence; she was beaten with rods, came through it unharmed and was then beheaded as well. The Roman Martyrology remembers them on 27 October.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916); the Roman Martyrology (1916).
