Martyr Nestor of Thessalonica
Commemorated: November 9 (October 27, Old Style)
Life
Nestor was a young Christian of Thessalonica and a disciple of Demetrius. His Passion tells that Emperor Maximian, visiting the city, held games at which his champion, a giant gladiator named Lyaeus, killed every challenger.
Nestor went to Demetrius in prison and asked for his blessing, then entered the arena and defeated Lyaeus, who was killed. The enraged emperor had Nestor beheaded at once, and ordered Demetrius to be killed with spears in his cell, c. 306.
