Martyrs Amphianus and Edesius of Lycia
Commemorated: April 15 (April 2, Old Style)
Life
Amphianus and Edesius were brothers from Patara in Lycia, born into a pagan family. After studying in Berytus (Beirut) they left home in secret, came to Caesarea in Palestine and were baptized by the presbyter Pamphilus, who later also died a martyr.
During the persecution under Emperor Maximinus, Amphianus, not yet twenty, seized the hand of the governor Urban as he was sacrificing and urged him to give up idols. He was tortured and thrown into the sea with a stone tied to him on 2 April 306. His brother Edesius was condemned to the copper mines and later, in Alexandria, struck the judge Hierocles for his cruelty to Christians; he was drowned in the same way.
