Martyr Sabinus of Egypt
Commemorated: March 29 (March 16, Old Style)
Life
Sabinus was a leading man and magistrate of Hermopolis in Egypt. When the persecution under Diocletian began, he left his house, office and wealth and hid with six other Christians in a small house in a remote village, spending his days in fasting and prayer.
A beggar to whom Sabinus used to give food betrayed him for two gold coins. Sabinus was bound with two heavy chains and brought before the governor Arianus, who had him torn with iron and burned. At last he was drowned in the river, in 287; the six taken with him also died.
