Martyr Charitina of Amisus
Commemorated: October 18 (October 5, Old Style)
Life
Charitina lived at Amisus in Pontus (today's Samsun on the Black Sea). Her Life says she was an orphan raised by a man named Claudius, who loved her as a daughter and built her a house where she lived as a virgin and taught those who came to her.
Under Diocletian she was denounced to the governor Domitian. Claudius, the Life says, put on sackcloth and wept when he had to give her up. According to the account, she was tortured with fire and thrown into the sea, came out unharmed, and finally died in prayer, c. 304.
