Commemorated: October 18 (October 5, Old Style)

Life

On this day the Russian Church remembers together the hierarchs of Moscow. Metropolitan Peter (d. 1326) moved the see to Moscow; Alexis (d. 1378) guided the state under the young Dmitry Donskoy; Jonah (d. 1461) was the first metropolitan elected by the Russian bishops themselves; Macarius (d. 1563) compiled the Great Menaion Reader; Philip was strangled in 1569 after rebuking Ivan the Terrible.

Job (d. 1607) was the first Patriarch of Moscow; Hermogenes died in captivity in 1612, having urged resistance to foreign occupation; Tikhon (d. 1925) led the Church after the revolution; Peter (Polyansky) was shot in 1937. Philaret (d. 1867), Innocent, the missionary of Alaska (d. 1879), and Macarius, the missionary of the Altai (d. 1926), complete the list. The common feast dates from 1596; Philip was added in 1875, the others later.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
