Martyr Agrippina of Rome

Commemorated: July 6 (June 23, Old Style)

Life

Agrippina was a young woman of Rome who, according to the Life, dedicated herself to Christ from childhood. Under the emperor Valerian, around 253–259, she was arrested, beaten with clubs and chained, and died of her sufferings. Three Christian women, named in the Life as Bassa, Paula and Agathonica, secretly took her body from Rome and carried it by ship to Sicily. There it was buried, and her church there later became known as a place where the sick sought healing.
