Holy Prince Theodore of Smolensk his sons David and Constantine, Wonderworkers of Yaroslavl

Commemorated: October 2 (September 19, Old Style)

Life

Theodore, called the Black, was a son of the Prince of Smolensk and lived in the second half of the thirteenth century. He received the city of Mozhaisk from his brothers, then married the heiress of Yaroslavl, and ruled Yaroslavl; after his brother's death he also inherited Smolensk. According to his Life, he travelled to the Mongol khan to confirm his title. After his first wife died, the townspeople refused to admit him, and he returned to the Horde.

There he married the khan's daughter, who was baptized as Anna, and with the khan's backing was enthroned in Yaroslavl. He ruled until old age, took monastic vows on his deathbed, and died in 1299. His sons by the khan's daughter, David (d. 1321) and Constantine, also ruled and are venerated with him.
