Holy Martyrs Trophimus, Sabbatius and Dorymedon
Commemorated: October 2 (September 19, Old Style)
Life
Trophimus and Sabbatius were Christians who came to Antioch in the time of Emperor Probus (276–282) during a drunken festival of Apollo at Daphne. The governor Atticus (Heliodorus), according to their Life, had them arrested for refusing to worship the gods. Sabbatius was hung up and torn with iron claws until he died.
Trophimus was sent to a harsher governor, Dionysius, at Synnada in Phrygia. In prison he was visited in secret by Dorymedon, a senator and councillor of the city, who bathed his wounds; Dorymedon was found out, declared himself a Christian and was tortured. Dionysius condemned both to wild beasts in the arena. The Church remembers them as martyrs of 276.
