Holy Martyrs Agape, Irene, and Chione

Commemorated: April 29 (April 16, Old Style)

Life

Agape, Chione and Irene were three sisters who lived near the Adriatic coast in the days of Emperor Diocletian. They were encouraged by Anastasia, called the Deliverer from Potions. Brought before the emperor, they refused to sacrifice, and the eldest, Agape, told him to attend to his state and not blaspheme the living God.

In Macedonia the governor Dulcitius had them brought in, and, as the Life tells, he lost his wits at their door and mistook cooking pots for the women. Agape and Chione were then condemned to the fire by the judge Sisinnius and died praying; their bodies were said to be unburnt. Irene was taken to a hill, wounded by arrows and died a day before Easter. Their date is usually given as 304.
