Holy Hierarch Eustathius, Archbishop of Antioch

Commemorated: March 5 (February 21, Old Style)

Life

Eustathius was born at Side in Pamphylia and was bishop of Beroea (Aleppo) in Syria before he was moved to the see of Antioch at the time of the First Ecumenical Council (325), where he was one of the leading opponents of Arius. Afterwards he quarrelled sharply with bishops of the Arian party, among them Eusebius of Caesarea, who accused him of Sabellianism.

In 331, his Life says, he was sent by imperial order into exile in Thrace and later moved to Philippi in Macedonia. Antioch stayed divided for decades between his followers and the official bishops. He died in exile, c. 337 or, by other reckonings, some years later. John Chrysostom preached a homily in his honour, calling him a martyr in will.
