Orthodox · † 1295
Holy Hierarch Basil, Bishop of Ryazan
Commemorated: June 23 (June 10, Old Style)
Life
Basil was bishop of Murom and Ryazan. Little about him is certain: some date his death to 1295, but historians think it more likely that he lived in the first half of the 14th century. He is buried in the cathedral of Sts Boris and Gleb in Ryazan.
A 16th-century tale tells that the people of Murom accused him falsely of keeping a woman in his house and wanted to drive him out. After prayer he went down to the Oka, spread his bishop's mantle on the water, stood on it holding an icon of the Mother of God, and was carried upstream to Old Ryazan, where the prince and people welcomed him, and the see moved there.
