Hieromartyr Timothy, Bishop of Prussa
Commemorated: June 23 (June 10, Old Style)
Life
Timothy was bishop of Prusa (Bursa) in Bithynia, at the foot of Mount Olympus. His Life tells of many wonders: he killed a great serpent living in a cave under a cypress by throwing into its mouth the veil from the altar, healed a king named Aretas and brought a queen to the Christian faith. He also preached widely and won many converts.
Under the emperor Julian he was arrested and put in prison, but crowds came to him there and he went on teaching. Julian ordered him to stop speaking of Christ; when he would not, an executioner was sent to behead him in his cell, c. 361–363. Believers buried his body with honour.
Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
