Hieromartyr Methodius the Bishop of Patara
Commemorated: July 3 (June 20, Old Style)
Life
Methodius was bishop of Patara in Lycia, in what is now southern Turkey. He is remembered as a writer who argued against the teaching of Origen, and he is known for a dialogue called the Symposium, or Banquet. According to his Life, pagans beheaded him around 312, at the end of the persecutions under Diocletian and his successors; the old Life places it under the emperor Aurelian, who reigned earlier. Some ancient writers call him bishop of Olympus, also in Lycia.
