Apostle Hermas of the Seventy
Commemorated: June 13 (May 31, Old Style)
Life
Hermas is named among the Seventy disciples sent out by Christ. The apostle Paul greets a Hermas among the Christians of Rome in his Letter to the Romans (16:14), and tradition identifies the two.
According to the tradition retold by Dimitry of Rostov, Hermas became bishop of Philippopolis in Thrace, today's Plovdiv in Bulgaria. The old sources say little more about his life.
