In the Bible

Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Mark 1:9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Tradition

No old tradition places the baptism here: the Gospels put John at Bethany beyond the Jordan, and pilgrims long went to the river near Jericho. Yardenit is a modern baptism site where the Jordan leaves the lake.

Here today

Steps and rails lead into the green river under eucalyptus trees; groups are baptized or renew their baptismal vows, many in white robes.
