Vlatadon Monastery

In the Bible

As soon as night fell, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. Paul later reminded them that his visit, after the shameful treatment at Philippi, was not in vain.

Acts 17:10As soon as night had fallen, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went into the Jewish synagogue.
1 Thess 2:1–2You yourselves know, brothers, that our visit to you was not in vain. As you are aware, we had already endured suffering and shameful treatment in Philippi. But in the face of strong opposition, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God.

Tradition

By local tradition, Paul preached on this spot in the upper city before leaving Thessalonica; the monastery was founded in the 14th century by the Vlatis brothers.

Here today

A working monastery by the old walls of the upper city, with a 14th-century church and a wide view over the bay.
