Tre Fontane

In the Bible

Paul writes: for me, to live is Christ and to die is gain; I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

Phil 1:21–23For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. So what shall I choose? I do not know. I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed.

Tradition

By tradition, Paul was beheaded here, at a place then called Aquae Salviae; a legend tells of three springs that rose where his head struck the ground, giving the place its name.

Here today

A quiet abbey of Trappist monks among eucalyptus trees, with three churches; in one, three fountains recall the legend.
