Pergamum: the acropolis
In the Bible
The letter to Pergamum says: I know where you live, where the throne of Satan sits; yet you have held fast to My name.
Rev 2:12–13
To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of the One who holds the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live, where the throne of Satan sits. Yet you have held fast to My name and have not denied your faith in Me, even in the day when My faithful witness Antipas was killed among you, where Satan dwells.Tradition
What “the throne of Satan” means is debated: one view points to the great altar of Zeus that stood here, another to the temples of the emperor cult.
Here today
On the steep hill: the theater, the temple of Trajan, the library ruins and the foundations of the altar of Zeus; a World Heritage site.
