In the Bible

John writes that he was on Patmos because of the word of God; on the Lord's day he heard a loud voice telling him to write to the seven churches.

Rev 1:9–11I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance that are in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and my testimony about Jesus. On the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, saying, “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”

Tradition

By tradition, John received the Revelation in this cave and his disciple Prochorus wrote it down; pilgrims are shown the cleft in the rock and the place where John laid his head.

Here today

A small church built around the cave on the hillside between the harbor of Skala and Chora; a World Heritage site.
