In the Bible

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, the top of Pisgah facing Jericho; the LORD showed him the whole land, and there Moses died.

Deut 34:1–5Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which faces Jericho. And the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead as far as Dan, all of Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negev, and the region from the Valley of Jericho (the City of Palms) all the way to Zoar. And the LORD said to him, “This is the land that I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.” So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, as the LORD had said.

Tradition

By tradition, Moses saw the Promised Land from this ridge; a church in his memory stood here by the 4th century, though the Bible says that no one knows where he was buried.

Here today

The Franciscan Memorial of Moses, reopened in 2016 over the old church and its 6th-century mosaics; from the terrace, the Jordan valley and the Dead Sea.

Through the eyes of old pilgrims

So we arrived at the summit of the mountain, where there is now a small church on the summit of Mount Nebo. … For from the door of the church we saw the place where the Jordan enters the Dead Sea, which place appeared below us as we stood.Egeria, c. 381–384
