House of the Virgin Mary
In the Bible
Near the cross stood Jesus' mother; Jesus gave her to the disciple whom He loved, and from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.Tradition
A later tradition: in 1891 priests, guided by the visions of the nun Anne Catherine Emmerich, identified a ruined house here as Mary's. Another tradition places her last years and her tomb in Jerusalem.
Here today
A small restored stone house in the woods on a mountain above Ephesus, venerated by Catholics and visited by Muslims, who also honor Mary.
