- Littafin sauti · awa 3 minti 27 · kashi 11The Pilgrimage of EtheriaEgeria (4th century) · Mai fassara: M. L. McClure and C. L. Feltoe (1919)
The oldest surviving account of a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land told by the pilgrim herself: a letter written in Latin in the early 380s by a woman now usually called Egeria (in older books Etheria or Silvia) to her “sisters” at home in the West. She describes Sinai, the land of Goshen, Mount Nebo and the Jordan valley, Edessa and Harran, and the services she saw in Jerusalem and Bethlehem through the church year. The letter survives in one damaged 11th-century manuscript found in 1884, its beginning and end lost. This recording reads the English translation of 1919 by M. L. McClure and C. L. Feltoe with their introduction, and marks the gaps in the text.

- Littafin sauti · awa 25 minti 11 · kashi 63The Innocents AbroadMark Twain (1835 – 1910)
Mark Twain’s humorous account of a pleasure cruise in 1867 on the steamship Quaker City, from New York through Europe and the Mediterranean to Constantinople, the Holy Land and Egypt, published in 1869. Nearly a third of the book follows the ride through Syria and Palestine — Damascus, Galilee, Nazareth, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea — as an American traveller saw them then. It is a comic travel book in Twain’s own voice of 1869: some passages mock the places, the people and his fellow travellers, and it carries the prejudices of its time.

Alexander Kinglake’s account of his journey of 1834–35 through the Ottoman East, published in 1844 and long one of the best-known English travel books: Belgrade and Constantinople, the Troad, Smyrna and Cyprus, a visit to Lady Hester Stanhope in Lebanon, Galilee, the Dead Sea, the Jordan, Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the desert crossing to Cairo in the plague of 1835, and the way back by Suez, Gaza, Nablus and Damascus. It is written in the personal, ironic voice of a young Englishman of the 1830s, and it carries the prejudices of its time.

Agnes Smith’s account, published in 1870 under her maiden name, of the journey she made from August 1868 to the next summer with her twin sister Margaret and a friend — three women travelling on their own: by Munich and Constantinople to Cyprus and Egypt, up the Nile to Wadi Halfa, then from Jaffa to Hebron and Jerusalem, Bethany, the Cave of Adullam, the Jordan and the Dead Sea, the Holy Fire at Easter, and on by Bethel to Damascus and the cedars of Lebanon. Later, as Agnes Lewis and Margaret Gibson, the twins found the Sinai palimpsest of the Old Syriac Gospels at Saint Catherine’s Monastery (1892).

- Littafin sauti · awa 23 minti 21 · kashi 81Ben-Hur: A Tale of the ChristLew Wallace (1827 – 1905)
A novel — fiction, not history — by the American writer Lew Wallace, a Union general in the Civil War, published in 1880. Its hero Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman of Jerusalem sent to the Roman galleys, his rival Messala and most of its people are invented. The story moves through Judea, Antioch and Rome in the time of Jesus, from the journey of the Magi to the Crucifixion, and its scenes from the Gospels are the novelist’s retelling. Wallace drew the places and customs from books and maps before he had seen the Holy Land. It was one of the best-selling American novels of its century and was filmed in 1925 and 1959.
