The Appearance of Christ at the Cenacle (Apparition du Christ au cénacle)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
The disciples are gathered at a long table in the same room as the last supper, with its brown curtains and star-shaped lamp. Suddenly Jesus stands among them, in a white mantle with a soft glow around it, and opens his hands.
The disciples start back and bow down along the table; some cover their faces, others stare. Small points of light shine in Jesus’ palms.
From the text
- “the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them” (John 20:19)
- “Peace be with you!” … “He showed them His hands and His side” (John 20:19–20)
The artist’s own
- Lights in Jesus’ palms instead of wounds
- The same room and lamp as at the supper
