Touch Me Not (Noli me tangere)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Now Mary has recognised him. She has thrown herself face down on the path before Jesus, her mantle spread out behind her and her hands reaching towards his feet.

Jesus stands above her in white, his mantle drawn over his head, and holds up a hand. The tomb with its small doorway lies at the left under olive trees.

From the text

  • Jesus says to her, “Mary.” She says, “Rabboni!” (John 20:16)
  • “Do not cling to Me … go and tell My brothers” (John 20:17)

The artist’s own

  • Mary lying full length on the ground
  • The tomb seen behind them in the garden
