The Disbelief of Saint Thomas (Incredulité de Saint Thomas)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Thomas kneels in a dark mantle before Jesus, his head bowed against him, and reaches to touch his side. Jesus, in a cream-coloured mantle, holds it open and bends his head towards Thomas.
Around them the other disciples and the women press close in the dim room; one woman covers her mouth. Tissot kept the gesture quiet and almost hidden in the folds of cloth.
