The Third Denial of Peter. Jesus' Look of Reproach

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

In a dark archway at the edge of the courtyard, a servant woman crouching on the floor points at Peter, who stands at the right with his head on his arm, half turning away.

Beyond the columns, in the reddish light of torches, the guards lead Jesus past through the crowded hall. Tissot made the meeting of the two glances the centre of a picture almost all in shadow.

From the text

  • “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a Galilean” (Luke 22:59)
  • “the Lord turned and looked at Peter” (Luke 22:61)
