The Primacy of Saint Peter (La primauté de Saint-Pierre)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Jesus and the disciples sit together on a ledge of rock under olive trees, on a hillside of pale stones and winding paths. Jesus, in white at the left, raises his hand as he speaks.

One disciple has stood up in a striped mantle with his hand at his head; the others sit close around, wrapped in yellow, blue and brown. Tissot kept the group small against the big rocky landscape.

From the text

  • “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16)
  • “you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church” (Matthew 16:18)

The artist’s own

  • The conversation on a rock ledge under olive trees
  • Two travellers in white on the path at the right
