The Healing of the Officer's Son (La guérison du fils de l'officier)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

The royal official comes to Jesus through a covered market, with stalls, hanging meat and baskets under awnings. Tissot dressed him like a great man of the East, in a tall red-and-gold hat and a fringed robe, with two attendants behind him.

He clasps his hands and looks down, waiting. Jesus, in grey and white, stands among his disciples at the right and raises one finger as he speaks.
