The Magdalene Runs to the Cenacle to Tell the Apostles that the Body of Jesus is No Longer in the Tomb (Madeleine court au cénacle et avertit les apôtres que le corps de Jésus n'est plus dans le tombeau)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
In a dim hall with columns and a hanging lamp, the disciples lie and sit on the floor, wrapped in their cloaks, hiding and resting.
At the right, through a doorway, Mary Magdalene has just come in at a run, and the first of them rise to meet her. Tissot left most of the sheet in brown shadow, as in the hour before dawn.
