Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene (Apparition de Jésus à Madeleine)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Mary Magdalene has turned away from the tomb and walks along the path in a dark veil and many-coloured mantle, her long hair loose down her back, one hand on a tree.
Behind the trunk, almost hidden, Jesus stands in a white mantle and watches her. She has not yet seen who he is. Tissot set the scene in a garden of olive trees and low plants.
From the text
- “she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus” (John 20:14)
- “Thinking He was the gardener” (John 20:15)
The artist’s own
