The Lord's Prayer (Le "Pater Noster")
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
Jesus stands on a hilltop in a long white mantle, his arms opened wide, and speaks to a small circle of disciples sitting on the grass around him. Behind him lies a walled town of flat roofs and towers in the low evening light.
Tissot painted the disciples in white headcloths and simple striped robes; one in the front, seen from behind, has dark curly hair and a brown coat. Their hands are raised or folded as they listen.
From the text
- “So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.’” (Matthew 6:9)
- “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11)
The artist’s own
- A view of a walled town behind the hill
- A small group rather than the great crowd of the sermon
