Lord, I Am Not Worthy (Domine Non Sum Dignus)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

The centurion stands at the foot of a flight of steps under a stone arch, seen from behind in a Roman helmet, a red cloak and a pleated kilt. He raises one hand towards Jesus, who has come down the steps with his disciples.

Jesus, wrapped in white, holds his hand at his chest and listens. Behind the meeting, the vaulted street opens onto houses, stairs and a doorway where someone peeps out.
