The Vine Dresser and the Fig Tree (Le vigneron et le figuier)
James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York
The owner of the vineyard, in a long brown robe and a spotted headcloth, stands with his hands on his hips and stares at a fig tree with bare, twisting grey branches and only a few leaves.
Across from him the keeper of the vineyard bends down in a short tunic and points to the ground at the roots, his hoe stuck in the earth beside him. Tissot drew every crooked twig of the tree.
