The Pilgrims of Emmaus on the Road (Les pèlerins d'Emmaüs en chemin)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

Three men walk along a pale stony road under olive trees: in the middle Jesus, in a grey-white mantle, speaking and gesturing; on either side the two travellers, one in a yellow turban and red robe, the other holding his head in his hand.

Tissot gave Jesus no light or halo here — he looks like any traveller, as the two did not recognise him.

From the text

  • Two of them going to a village called Emmaus (Luke 24:13)
  • “Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them” (Luke 24:15)
  • “their eyes were kept from recognizing Him” (Luke 24:16)

The artist’s own
