The Foal of Bethpage (L'ânon de Bethphagé)

James Tissot · 1886–1894
Brooklyn Museum, New York

In a lane between stone walls under olive trees, the two disciples have come to a doorway with a carved lintel. One in a striped cloak speaks to a man in an orange robe who leans out to them.

The donkey and her colt stand in the lane; a woman in a dark mantle sits on the donkey, and two faces peer over the wall behind. Tissot set the scene in a village lane with sun and shadow on the stones.
