Saint John on Patmos (Ms. Ludwig III 1, fol. 2, from the Getty Apocalypse)
Unknown English painter · about 1255–1260
Getty Center, Los Angeles
The Getty Apocalypse was made in England, probably London, about 1255–1260. Books of Revelation with a picture on every page were popular among English nobles; here the pictures are drawn in pen and coloured with thin washes, with gold for the halos.
John lies asleep on the island of Patmos, labelled “Pathmos insula”, in a green sea. An angel touches him, and other islands with little towns float at the corners.
