Virginmartyr Susanna and those with her: Gaius the Pope of Rome, Gavinius the Presbyter, his brother and the father of Susanna, Maximus, Claudius, and his wife Prepedigna, and their sons Alexander and Cythius

Commemorated: August 24 (August 11, Old Style)

Life

Susanna belongs to the old Roman traditions about the family of Pope Gaius (283–296). Her Acts say she was the daughter of the priest Gabinius and the niece of the pope, and that she refused to marry a man of Emperor Diocletian's family, saying she had dedicated herself to Christ. Her kinsman Claudius and his brother Maximus, sent to persuade her, became Christians themselves with Claudius's wife Praepedigna and their sons Alexander and Cutias. They were exiled and burned, and Susanna was beheaded in her own house, c. 295. The church of Santa Susanna in Rome is held to stand on its site.
