Commemorated: August 28 (August 15, Old Style)

Life

On the feast of the Dormition the Russian Church also honours several icons of the Dormition kept in famous monasteries. The Kiev Caves icon is linked with the building of the monastery's Dormition church, begun in 1073; the Paterikon of the Caves tells that Greek masters brought it from Constantinople. The Pskov Caves icon belongs to the monastery whose first church was cut into the sandstone hill in the 1470s. Others are the Ovinovskaya, the Semigorodnaya from the Vologda land, and the Pyukhtitsa icon from Estonia, where, according to local tradition, the Mother of God appeared at a spring in the 16th century; a convent was founded there in 1891.
