Venerable Stephen the Wonderworker the Abbot of Tryglia

Commemorated: April 10 (March 28, Old Style)

Life

Stephen lived as an ascetic from childhood and, at the insistence of the brethren, became abbot of the monastery of Tryglia, on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara. When the emperor Leo V the Armenian (813–820) renewed the attack on icons, he summoned Stephen and demanded that he sign a renunciation of their veneration.

Stephen refused and rebuked the emperor. He was tortured, imprisoned and sent into exile, where he died worn out by suffering and illness, in the 9th century. Tradition calls him a wonderworker.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
