Venerable Simeon Stylites (the Younger) of Wonderful Mountain
Commemorated: June 6 (May 24, Old Style)
Life
Simeon was born in Antioch in 521 to a Christian couple. According to his Life, his birth was foretold to his mother, and an earthquake that struck the city when he was a small child killed his father. At seven he went to a mountain near Antioch and, by the Life's account, climbed a pillar beside that of Abbot John. Later he settled on the 'Wonderful Mountain', where he founded a monastery and lived on a pillar until the end of his life.
He was ordained priest at thirty-three. His Life tells of healings and of his foretelling a second earthquake at Antioch. He died there in 596 at the age of seventy-five.
