Venerable Sabbatius of Solovki

Commemorated: October 10 (September 27, Old Style)

Life

Little is recorded about Sabbatius's origins. He was an old monk of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery in the time of Metropolitan Photius (1410–1431), who moved to Valaam in search of a more solitary life and then, c. 1429, to the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea. He lived there for years in a cell, joined at first by the monk Herman, and received no one.

According to his Life, when fishermen from the mainland tried to settle on the island, two radiant young men drove them away, so that the place remained for monks. In old age he crossed the sea to the mainland to receive communion, which he had not had for years, from an abbot he met on the road. He died soon afterwards, on 27 September 1435.
