Venerable Prince Yaroslav, (in baptism Constantine), with his children Michael and Theodore, Wonderworkers of Murom

Commemorated: June 3 (May 21, Old Style)

Life

Dates differ. The Church calendar gives the year 1129 and names him Yaroslav, called Constantine in baptism. The Life retold by Dimitry of Rostov calls him Constantine Svyatoslavich and says that in 1192 he came from Kiev with his sons Michael and Theodore to Murom, where the people were still pagans. In the battle for the town Michael was killed. Constantine took Murom, built its first church, of the Annunciation, and, according to the Life, baptized the townspeople and set up a bishop's see. He was remembered as a defender of the poor and orphans.

The Life adds that when Tsar Ivan IV came to Murom in 1553, on his way to Kazan, builders digging for a church over the tombs found the relics of the three princes undecayed.

Retold briefly in our own words from: the Lives of the Saints by St Dimitry of Rostov (1902–1916).
