Venerable Martinian of Cæsarea in Palestine
Commemorated: February 26 (February 13, Old Style)
Life
Martinian went at eighteen to live as a hermit on a mountain near Caesarea in Palestine and spent twenty-five years there. His Life tells that a courtesan named Zoe came to his cell on a stormy night pretending to be a lost traveller. To overcome the temptation he lit a fire and stood in it barefoot until his body was burned. Zoe repented, went to St Paula's community in Bethlehem and lived there as a nun.
Martinian moved to a bare rock in the sea. When a ship was wrecked there, the only survivor, a girl named Photinia, stayed on the rock as a hermit, and he left; the Life says that two dolphins carried him to shore. He spent the rest of his life wandering, visited a hundred and sixty-four cities, and died in Athens, c. 422.
