Venerable Macarius, Abbot Zheltovodsk and Unzha
Commemorated: August 7 (July 25, Old Style)
Life
Macarius was born in 1349 at Nizhny Novgorod and, while still a boy, became a monk of the Pechersky monastery of the Ascension there. He later moved to the banks of the Volga below the city and settled by a lake called the Yellow Water, where followers gathered and he founded a monastery of the Holy Trinity, which later became the Makaryev monastery.
In old age he left for the north, to the river Unzha in the region of Kostroma, where he founded another monastery and spent his last years. He died in 1444 at the age of about ninety-five. His memory was especially honoured in the seventeenth century.
