Venerable Job, in Schema Joshua, of Anzer

Commemorated: March 19 (March 6, Old Style)

Life

Job, born John in Moscow in 1635, was a parish priest and later court priest and confessor to the family of Peter the Great. When the scribe Grigory Talitsky, under torture, revealed that he had called the tsar the Antichrist in confession and that the priest had kept it secret, John was exiled in 1701 to the Solovetsky Monastery and made a monk.

There, as Job, he did hard labour with the other monks, then moved to the hermitage on the island of Anzer and became its head. In 1714 he founded with his disciples the Golgotha-Crucifixion skete on Anzer, and in schema took the name Joshua (Iisus). He died there in 1720 and was canonized in 2000.
