Venerable Gerasimus of Vologda

Commemorated: March 17 (March 4, Old Style)

Life

Gerasimus is remembered as the first monk of Vologda in northern Russia. According to a 17th-century tale, the main source for his life, he came from Kiev, became a monk and a priest there, and in 1147 arrived on the Vologda river, where he founded the monastery of the Holy Trinity on the Kaisarov stream. Tradition even credits him with founding the town; historians doubt the early date.

He died in 1178. Veneration grew after his tomb was rediscovered in the 1640s, and he was later counted among the saints of Vologda.
