Venerable George of Mt. Maleon in the Peloponnesus

Commemorated: April 17 (April 4, Old Style)

Life

George was a monk of the ninth century who settled on Mount Maleon (Malea) in the Peloponnese, after, as the accounts say, refusing the marriage his parents had arranged. He gave himself to fasting, manual work, prayer and the study of Scripture. Visitors came to him for counsel, and he withdrew higher up the mountain for quiet. According to his Life, he foretold his death three years ahead and gave his disciples final advice before he died.
